Green Initiative
DuPage Habitat for Humanity has always built and sold homes that are affordable for working families.
With the development of the Pioneer Prairie neighborhood, DuPage Habitat will now build homes that are
both affordable and sustainable. In this planned "green" community, DuPage Habitat is balancing up-front,
cost-conscious development with long-term, environmentally-conscious decisions. This 11-home project will
feature homes built to the Energy Star certification level, extensive material recycling, and low-impact
landscaping – a three-part strategy to minimize Habitat's footprint in West Chicago, and maximize cost
savings for Habitat's limited-income homeowners.
DuPage Habitat is working in partnership with ComEd,
the College of DuPage,
and a team of green experts on this green initiative. ComEd is providing funding and technical design expertise.
Students in the College of DuPage's Sustainable Design class are preparing a cost-benefit analysis of
energy efficiency recommendations for home construction, recycling, and landscaping.
