Committee Volunteers

Committees composed of volunteers carry out much of DuPage Habitat’s operations. Here is more detail of what each committee is responsible for:

Construction Committee

Activities:
Committee members support the Construction Manager and House Leaders in the construction of new or rehabbed homes. Committee members play different roles ranging from scheduling of volunteers, materials handling, conducting safety checks, training of crew leaders, leading teams of unskilled construction volunteers, etc.

Time Commitment:

  • Time commitments vary depending on role
  • In general, committee members meet every Tuesday night @ 7 p.m.
  • Participate on build days (Thursdays and Saturdays) – Minimum of 2 build days per month.
  • Assist with Crew Leader Training on 4th Tuesday of each month

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Good interpersonal communication skills
  • Patience and ability to teach unskilled volunteers
  • Willingness to learn Habitat building techniques and safety standards
  • Basic understanding or interest in home construction
  • Looking for skilled tradesman or handy people willing to learn!


Site Selection Committee

Activities:
This Committee researches communities as potential locations for Habitat homes. This includes identifying land to purchase and interacting with municipal officials, neighborhood associations, real estate agents and property owners. Committee members locate homes that are good candidates for rehab and assess homes for participation in our Brush With Kindness Program.A Brush with Kindness is a program that helps preserve homeownership by partnering with  homeowners struggling to restore and maintain a safe and decent place to live.

Time Commitment:
Meet 1 to 2 times a month. Most other committee communications are conducted by phone or e-mail.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of DuPage County and its resources
  • Ability to ensure confidentiality
  • Flexible schedule and access to a vehicle to assist with scouting properties and attending open houses as needed
  • Basic understanding of real estate, land use and government relations a plus!


Public Relations Committee

Activities:
The Public Relations Committee promotes DuPage Habitat’s work in the community through print mailings, e-mail, the internet and other media. Committee members write articles for newsletters and newspapers as well as advertising for special events. Members participate in speaking engagements and plan new ways to educate the community about DuPage Habitat.

Time Commitment:
Meet 1 to 2 times a month as needed; on-going project support

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills including public speaking
  • Passion and ability to convey Habitat mission
  • Enjoy working with a variety of people
  • Knowledge of DuPage corporate, faith-based and community organizations
  • Knowledge of local media outlets
  • Knowledge of social media


Outreach Committee

Activities:
The OutreachCommittee identifies potential partners in the community, meets with business leaders to solicit financial support, engages local faith communities to participate in Habitat projects and approaches donors to ask for either cash or “in-kind” gifts of material, volunteer labor, property or other support.

Time Commitment:
Meet 1 to 2 times a month as needed
Evening or weekend availability to present

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong communication skills including public speaking
  • Passion and ability to convey Habitat mission
  • Enjoy working with a variety of people
  • Knowledge of DuPage corporate, faith-based and community organizations
  • Willingness to be trained on making Habitat for Humanity presentations


Special Events Committee

Activities:
The Special Events Committee plans DuPage Habitat house dedications and annual fundraising events including the golf outing and youth volleyball tournament. Committee members handle promotions and publicity, coordinate sponsors, manage logistics and perform other tasks to execute the events.

Time Commitment:
Meet 1 to 2 times a month as needed with additional time commitment for major events in March and July/August

  • Strong organizational and communication skills
  • Flexibility
  • Creativity
  • Enjoy working with a variety of people
  • Knowledge of DuPage community resources
  • Interest and/or experience in event planning, marketing or fundraising


Volunteer Relations Committee

Activities:
The Volunteer RelationsCommittee recruits new volunteers, facilitates the volunteer orientations, plans volunteer recognition events, provides volunteer coordination for the worksite, oversees the volunteer database and works closely with DuPage Habitat staff and committee chairs to address volunteer needs.

Time Commitment:

  • Attend monthly orientation sessions
  • Additional meetings closer to recognition events

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Flexibility and reliability
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills
  • Comfortable with public speaking
  • Passion and ability to convey Habitat’s mission
  • Knowledge of DuPage community resources
  • Experience as a volunteer is helpful


Family Selection Committee

Activities:
The Family Selection Committee identifies applicants that are eligible to become Partner Families. Some of their responsibilities include:

  • Hosting application sessions
  • Screening applications
  • Interviewing applicants
  • Recommending applicants for approval by the Board of Directors

Time Commitment:
Meet 1 to 2 times a month as needed with additional time commitment for homeowner application sessions
Evening/weekend availability for conducting family interviews

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Excellent communication skills
  • Compassionate, yet analytical
  • Organized with scheduling and paperwork
  • Able to ensure applicants’ confidentiality
  • Enjoy working with a variety of people
  • Basic understanding of credit reports and real estate


Family Support Committee

Activities:
This Committee helps Partner Families with the transition process of becoming homeowners. The Committee provides classes and other educational opportunities on personal finance, budgeting, home maintenance, community resources and other important information. Committee members assist Partner Families in making choices concerning their homes. The Committee also provides a volunteer to guide each selected family, on a one-on-one basis, through the Habitat homeownership process.

Time Commitment:
Meet 1 to 2 times a month as needed
Evening/weekend availability for monthly partner family classes

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Flexibility
  • Ability to ensure applicants’ confidentiality
  • Enjoy establishing relationships with new people
  • Basic understanding of home maintenance, finance and community resources
  • Bilingual Spanish language skills are a plus!


Information Technology Committee

Activities:
The Information Technology Committee provides ongoing support of DuPage Habitat’s website, Sharepoint, Raiser’s Edge database, server management and overall technological infrastructure. Committee members also assist with graphic design projects and troubleshoot IT issues.

Time Commitment:

  • Meet every other Wednesday via conference call at 11:30 a.m.
  • Some of the work can be done remotely

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Flexibility and reliability
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office, Adobe software, Sharepoint and Raiser’s Edge
  • Ability to ensure confidentiality
  • General technological literacy


Finance Committee

Activities:
The Finance Committee works with the Business Manager to oversee the budget and finances of DuPage Habitat. It helps set policy for financial planning and tracking and directs the annual budgeting process. Committee members work on internal audit preparation, financial policies review, financial fitness seminars and property tax exemption.

Time Commitment:
45-minute meetings (phone-in) every other Wednesday at 11:30 AM.

  • Detail oriented
  • Ability to ensure confidentiality
  • Finance, accounting or other relevant experience


ReStore Committee

Activities:
Cashiers, Trucking and Deliver, Stock

Time Commitment:
Restore Store Manager assigned

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Excellent organization skills
  • Cashiering
  • Valid drivers license
