Hammers and Heels 2012
Women Build
What is it?
The 2012 DuPage Habitat for Humanity Women Build will work to engage a diverse group of women to assist in the construction
of a group of three townhomes. The Women Build Committee will seek to raise $25,000 to support this effort, and to promote
this project and the overall work of DuPage Habitat for Humanity.
Where is it?
The construction will take place in Glen Ellyn, IL, where DuPage Habitat is building a new neighborhood of 12 sustainable
towhomes, called Prairie Green.
When is it?
The Women Build will take place on Thursdays and Saturdays in September, 2012. Fundraising, training and publicity events
will be scheduled from January - September 2012. Check out the Events page for more details
Why Support It?
- It's really fun.
- Nearly 50% of Habitat homeowners applying today are single moms. According to the US Census, more than 40% of women
who head families are now living in poverty. Habitat breaks the cycle of poverty through affordable homes.
- You will be helping Habitat, and our partner families, by bringing a new source of volunteers, funding and excitement
to our affiliate.
Women build relationships.
Women build families.
Women build homes.
The Women Build program was established by Habitat for Humanity International to encourage the involvement of women in the
construction of Habitat homes. The mission of Women Build is simple — to recruit, educate and nurture women to build
— and advocate for — simple, decent and affordable houses in their communities. Women Build crews have already
built more than 1,750 Habitat for Humanity houses within the United States, as well as in dozens of other countries.
Women Build is a part of the larger work of DuPage Habitat for Humanity (DHFH), not a stand-alone undertaking. It is coordinated
closely with other ongoing DHFH projects and activities in order to maximize the affiliate's overall capacity to serve the community.
The program taps into the inherent strength of the female community to not only build homes, but to create lasting connections with
the Habitat for Humanity International mission.
The distinguishing goals of DHFH Women Build program highlight:
Inclusion: A bonding and strengthening experience for the affiliate through ongoing communication
with all Women Build participants
Learning: A positive, confidence-building learning atmosphere for women through instruction and
guidance by expert construction professionals
Bonding: An opportunity to establish new friendships with a broad spectrum of DuPage-area women
and experience a genuinely enduring connection with DHFH
