September 28, 1995.

In May of 1995, the DuPage Habitat for Humanity® site committee began searching the County for our first project. The committee found a house in West Chicago that was vacant and in need of repair. The original owner sold this property to DuPage Habitat at the cost of the land and chose to take advantage of a charitable tax deduction which enabled him to donate the cost of the house. We now had our first affordable housing project. The building committee coordinated volunteer and in-kind efforts to completely renovate this three bedroom ranch home with a full basement.

June 10, 1995, marked our first Groundbreaking ceremony, and the beginning of demolition of the sections of the house that could not be saved. In the end, we saw a beautiful "new" home with proper insulation, siding, roofing, mechanical systems, appliances, kitchen cabinets, carpeting, and beautiful landscaping. On dedication day, we also experienced the joy of seeing the first DuPage Habitat for Humanity® homeowner cut the ribbon and move into their home.
